Dermoids

Dermoids are an unusual fault that the patient is born with, where the eye  presents with a mass of skin like tissue in an abnormal position. The mass is often pigmented with hair and may be found on the eyelids, conjunctiva, or cornea.

Depending on its position and amount of hair, the dermoid  may cause minimal to severe irritation. Most dermoids are surgically removed once the patient is mature enough to cope with a general anaesthetic, surgery is curative but if the dermoid is on the cornea – a scar will remain.
