Corneal Grafting (Sequestration)

Corneal and conjunctival grafting are frequent surgical procedures performed at the Auckland Animal Eye Centre when attempting to save badly damaged and diseased eyes. The procedures may be used for severe corneal infections, ulcerations, tumours and sequestrations.

The more commonly performed conjunctival pedicle graft involves a thin pedicle of conjunctiva with its blood supply being harvested from the white conjunctival tissue surrounding the cornea.

The pedicle is then sutured directly into / onto the corneal lesion / defect. The graft provides direct mechanical support, also having it’s own blood supply allows the diseased cornea to use the bloods protective and healing factors. The conjunctival tissue incorporates into the cornea leaving a permanent scar.
